Ethiopian Agelgel

Woven grass with a leather outer covering. These baskets were commonly used in Ethiopia people as a kind of “lunch/hot box”. Unique in its kind it is also a prized decoration item for new homes and also given as a well adored gift for weddings, new home and new cultural area addition.
When used as a serving or storing basket, It will be filled with Ethiopian delicacies and insulated by its age defying tactics of Straw inner woven linings and its cow leather outer coverings. In the old days Ethiopians would travel filling the “Agelgel”.These insulated baskets would keep the food warm for many hours, so it could be eaten at midday.
The baskets usually have straps to tie them closed as well as to make carrying them easier. The leather becomes heavily patinated with extended use.
It comes in a large Size at 15″ to 16″ in Diameter x 10″ to 12″ in height.
